Most of the time, when we hear of someone inspiring it’s an adult, or a teenager at least. That is why today’s Thank You Thursday post is truly remarkable. A remarkable story. A remarkable fundraising initiative. A remarkable response.
They say when life throws you lemons you should make lemonade. Well, that’s exactly what little four-year-old Alex Scott did when the young cancer patient decided she wanted to raise money for cancer research.
Alex was diagnosed with childhood cancer while she was still a baby, she hadn’t yet turned one, and doctors told her family that if she survived she probably wouldn’t ever be able to walk.
Over the following years she fought one battle after another – including learning to walk – and proved she was a determined and brave young girl. When she was four, however, doctors discovered her tumours had started growing again and she needed immediate surgery.
While in hospital Alex told her mother that she wanted to have a lemonade stand when she came home so she could make some money to give to the doctors that helped her while she was sick.
Later that year, Alex held her first lemonade stand with the help of her older brothers and she raised a whopping $2,000! The following year, Alex held another lemonade stand and raised more money and at the same time continued her battle with childhood cancer. Other people in nearby communities heard about Alex’s story and they held their own lemonade stands too, also raising money for childhood cancer. This continued for a couple of years.
Sadly, when Alex was eight and a half she lost her battle with cancer.
That was in 2004. And at that point Alex’s stand – and inspired stands around the USA – had collectively raised about $1,000,000 for research into childhood cancer. As I mentioned early that was a remarkable fundraising initiative. But Alex’s Lemonade Stand didn’t end there. The community response was overwhelming and in 2005 her parents set up Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) and in the ensuing six years has raised about 50 million dollars!
A short three minute video about Alex and the fundraising empire she founded and inspired is below. A simple idea. Executed well. Beautifully inspired.
This Thank You Thursday the Fish Chick would like to send heartfelt gratitude to the entire Scott family for being brave enough to carry on with Alex’s mission. And Alex, your inspiration and selflessness has done more than I’m sure you ever imagined possible. Your lemonade stand was – and continues to be – responsible for saving the lives of many other children. You were a true hero. Thank you.

P.S Apologies about this week’s Thank You Thursday actually being posted on a Friday. We’ve had a few technical issues – pond water in the circuits or something. 🙂
