I must admit that when I started the Thank You Thursday part of this blog I didn’t really ever expect to be writing about toilet paper. I had hopes of writing about amazing people that make a difference in the world or ideas that pave the way for a better future. It’s quite odd, now, that this week I learned about something that brings these three things together. An amazing person, a make-the-world-better idea and toilet paper. And it’s a culmination that I just had to share.
2.4 billion people (almost 40% of the world) do not have access to basic sanitation. This results in waterborne illnesses that kill 4000 children under the age of five every single day. Put simply, the developing world needs toilets.
Who gives a crap?
Don’t worry, I’m not being rude or obscene, I’m sharing the toilet paper story with you. You see, it’s all about a social enterprise called Who gives a crap?. Founded about two years ago by engineer Simon Griffiths, this innovative organisation has developed a way that allows something with seemingly one-dimensional usage, like toilet paper, to be used to make transformational change in the world.
Who gives a crap toilet paper is not only 100% recycled, part of its profits will be invested in water sanitation project in third world countries. They are ready to launch this initiative but need to raise $50,000 capital for the first bulk order, so this week Simon is sitting on a toilet and not getting up until the money has been raised. Literally.
I’m going to let Simon tell you about it himself. He does such a good job of it… even if he is on the toilet. 🙂
What do you think? A brilliant idea? An even more brilliant marketing idea?
I think it’s fabulous. Fabulous and funny, but serious at the same time. The concept. The promotion of it. The whole lot. So much so, that I’ve invested in the cause on their crowdfunding webpage. You can invest too if you like, from as little as $5, and you’ll even get a personalised thank you note on a piece of toilet paper! Check it out here.
See you in the pond,
The Fish Chick.
P.S In case you do want to see Simon sitting on the toilet, you better get on to it quick, (hopefully he wont be there for long). Visit the site here.
