Thank You Thursday: Father and Son Making Footprints

Inspiration… it’s a great word! Loaded with meaning – we all want it; sometimes it happens without looking, kind of creeps up on us, other times it’s like a lightning bolt, sometimes it’s totally missing in action!

But every so often you come across a story which is not only inspiring but clearly the people involved are inspired!

An Australian father and son team I recently learned about are exactly that – inspired. They have set out to walk 1200kms; walking the length of New Zealand’s South Island through mountains, rivers, snow, dust, forests and fields. But this just isn’t any father and son – it’s a father and a son who happens to be only eight years old! What a walk!

Father and son set for an adventure of a lifetime

Not only do they want to spend some quality time together where they will be challenged in many ways, but while having the time of their lives they will be raising money for Room to Read – a fantastic organisation whose goal is to improve literacy and change lives for children across Asia and Africa.

Room to Read aims to improve literacy for 10 million children by 2015 and with father and son team John and Lucas championing their cause they will be just that much closer to doing so.

John and Lucas will be heading off in the next few days and are expecting the adventure to take about 90 days. Obviously, there is a lot of planning and preparation that goes into an adventure like this and it has been something they have been training for for many months too.

John and Lucas’ adventure – walking with Dad – is one of those stories you read and know that these people are truly doing something out of the ordinary.

So on this Thank you Thursday the Fish Chick would like to acknowledge the inspiration, courage and tenacity of this father and son duo!

See you in the pond
